Certain environmental and physiological factors can increase your likelihood of developing this disorder. Some factors include genetics, personality, and environmental factors, such as a traumatic event. Other major life events, such as pregnancy, can cause depression.

What does depression feel like?

Depression symptoms vary from person to person. Common warning signs include:

  • Fatigue
  • A sense of restlessness
  • Not sleeping enough or sleeping too much
  • Changes to appetite

Suicidal thoughts are a significant indicator of depression. These thoughts differ from just thinking about death and persist for long periods. They may even lead to suicide attempts.

Depression can also cause physical symptoms in patients, including aches and pains, like cramps or headaches.

If you’re experiencing these warning signs of depression, know that you’re not alone. The team at In Touch Counseling Services can help get you to recenter and find the treatment plan that works best for you.

How is depression treated?

If you’re experiencing depression, there are several ways to approach treatment. First, remember that you’re not alone and that depression impacts millions of people every day.

Therapy, or counseling, is one way that many mental health professionals recommend treating depression. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy, for example, have been known to help patients work through their depression.

Therapists can help patients set up a self-care plan as well to help them cope with depression. These plans usually focus on diet, exercise, sleep, massage, reduction in alcohol, and the development of other healthy life habits.

In addition to these traditional depression treatments, the team at In Touch Counseling Services also offers FDA-approved Alpha-Stim® cranial electrotherapy stimulation. This noninvasive treatment sends electrical signals into your brain via clips you wear on your ears.

As the signals reach your brain, they stimulate the neurotransmitters that help to regulate your mood. Alpha-Stim works similarly to antidepressants, but you get long-lasting results without relying on medication.

The team at In Touch Counseling Services helps you find the most effective depression treatment for you. Contact the office to schedule an appointment by calling today or booking online.
